Finally pre-ordered my Pandora!
So, today the pre-orders began for this great portable console/laptop/linux thingy!
It took a while (their servers were swamped as soon as it went online) but in the end I managed to place my order!
God, I can't wait for my !

Couldn't be a hoax: I've been following this thing right from the beginning, almost 2 years ago. It's real.
You've never seen the whole device because it's not made yet. Or to be more accurate, we actually have seen everything except the plastic shell to house all the bits we've seen up to now.
One of the most expensive parts of consumer electronics, at least during the design stage, is the cost of the mold for the plastic casing to hold all your circuit boards and what-not: if you get it wrong and need to make another mold you are talking thousands of dollars/euros down the drain. That's one of the reasons why rapid prototyping machines and 3D printers are becoming so popular: if they save you from just one mistake you'll have recovered the money you spent on the 3D printer.
So you can see why they're holding off on the plastic casing till the very last minute.

Well I don't know if you wear really tight jeans or not
but it fits in my pockets OK (back pocket always and front pocket depends on how baggy my trousers are!).
So far I'm mainly enjoying the PSX emulator, and for music and video it's great. The N64 emu is shaping up nicely too. Even have Quake 1,2,3 (and of course Doom) as well.
The only thing I really missed was a decent simple plain text viewer (for ebooks) that had bookmarking capabilities to remember where I left off reading. Oddly enough the Pandora didn't ship with such an app, though it does have text/doc/pdf viewers, just no bookmarking in them. So I dug up some source code from an old GP2X app, did a recompile on my actual Pandora, and now I have an ebook reader.
And I don't know how old you think I am, but my university days are many, many years behind me. You're never too old to play a game on something!
I do travel a lot for work which means waiting around Barajas and el Prat de llobregat airports for several hours, and that's when the Pandora really becomes useful!

So it took 2 years? Really? Krass..
I got a gp2x 'back in the days', and it serves me well, but I'm pretty sure I'll never get a 'gaming exclusive' device like that again.
Especially with all the arm tablets smart-books and phones running (linux/android) slowly appearing on the horizon.
But 'homebrew stuff' is definitely cooler than a ds or psp
