There is work going into this, probably preliminary stuff, called ENET, but none of it works yet.
This port never had multiplayer.
If you download the package, you will see that the Readme doesn't mention multiplayer at all [as a usable feature]. There might be options for it, but it isn't supported. I wouldn't call it "deceiving" because it's mentioned beforehand.
I'm confused...

Even some basic support should have been added by now. For those interested, this book could be of some help: "Net Warriors in C". It covers the basics of coding a raycasting engine with serial, modem, and tcp/ip support.

You mean you haven't played EDGE on line yet?! You must be using the shareware version.
Just kidding! No, EDGE has no netplay. At this stage in it's life I don't think it ever will unfortunately.
It was going to have it, then it was put on the backburner, then it was stripped out and replaced with new net code, then that was also put on the backburner, but the menus got left in.
