Lightmaps... we really need them

Postby Joppu » Tue 10 Jul 2007 11:18 am

So, are lightmaps planned for images.ddf? I thougt about grayscale images where white is ligthest and and black is the darkest. what's you opinion?

PS. Could it be possible to add a new section to the forum "edge help" so you could ask there help for coding help?

How do you plan to use those "lightmaps" ?

To me lightmaps mean the Quake style lighting, where you run your map through a program to generate the lightmaps (working out from all the lights which parts are light and dark) and the engine uses those lightmaps automatically. Do you mean that, or something else?

This was suggested on the Legacy boards years ago... i think he means a greyscale "copy" of an image which equates to how "lit up" the image is, so you could make Imps have glowing red eyes you can see in the dark

I guess you mean something like these:

Those screenshots came from Risen3D and Doomsday Engine. I don't know much about graphic effects, so I can't explain it in detail.

EDGE would be a greater Source Port (probably the greatest) with those textures effects.

Just now I experimented with a "sector glow" effect.
No guarantees that this will be added, but here is what it looked like (sprites are not affected by it yet) :

Very, very impressive stuff there (around the same quality as JDoom, judging by that screen). With a feature such as that, I'd be able to scrap all these lit up 3d floors for lava effects :)

I'd go so far as to say that I (along with pretty much everyone else here) would be VERY happy with that sector glow as it is. Looks wickedly eerie, but not overdramatic either.
Nice work.
