RTS access to more keyboard keys

Remember it never hurts to ask, but you might not get it.

RTS access to more keyboard keys

Postby Dartmerc » Tue 28 Aug 2007 11:44 pm

I know this will most probably be implemented when full lua support is finally added (really cannot wait :D), but I think it'd be so great if we could get access to more then just the 'use' key in RTS scripts.
Advantages of this are you could have a key reserved to open conversation (even a key for agressive conversaion, and one for polite conversation), a seperate meelee attack key, a special attack key, a change team member key (when become() is implemented) etc. Really, the use for this is limitless.
The only issue I could see, is that the keys set by the modder may not work well with the control scheme of the player. I play with WASD, so i'd use q, z, x, t or similar for these keys.
This obviously wouldn't work well for someone using the arrow keys.
Possibly give modders x number of special keys, and have these added to control layont config, bindable by the end user?

Hope that all makes sense.

Makes perfect sense to me, Dartmerc, and you indeed pose a very interesting idea. Though you may be right, this might be something Ajapted has planned for when EDGE obtains LUA support. The ambitious modder might find a plethora of uses out of a simple feature like that, I'm sure.

Well alot of these ideas came to me this morning when I was throwing around the idea in my head of a marvel super hero themed TC. Say the main characters are captain america and ironman.

You control one or the other, but can switch real-time depending on who's specialist skills are required.
This is done by using an RTS script bound to a custom key to call become().

Captain America attacks with melee punches, but a custom key can be pressed to block with his shield (calling a set of sprites with a resistance state, see my other post), or can throw the shield with another custom key.

Iron Man could have melee punches as attacks too, but could use custom keys for blaster attacks. Another custom key could call an RTS script to toggle his ability to fly.

I?ve been playing with the idea of a comic themed TC, as sprite graphics fit in perfectly with the theme, and I will probably undertake a project like this in the future, considering the practice my current project will give me with scripting a second character.
