EMUS 2.0 To Do list

Postby Lobo » Fri 03 Aug 2007 8:59 pm

Howdy,
well I hope to finally get off my ass and get a new version of EMUS out to the public over the next month, so I thought I'd better start noting down stuff here to get included/be fixed in the next version.

Changes since v1:
* Fix dodgy link bug in DDF OffLine (most noticeable in Vista)
* Edit descriptions of "mapstuff" in DDF OffLine
* WMT (Wad Merging Tool): allow "pname" merging
* WMT: show preview of clicked entries in the Subwad
* Allow Control+C copying from DDF Offline
* Allow mouse scrollwheel in DDF Offline
* Searching functionality in DDF Offline
* Searching functionality in RTSIDE

*New tool = WET(Wad Editing Tool): will replace ELI for your wad editing needs. Think XWE, but with a lot less frills.
*Shiny new DDF editor (inside WET) which is a lot faster than before and with some new capabilities
*New tool = MDS(MD2 States Tool): don't get too used to it, it's gonna be completely changed next release!

*Outdated Help file ;)

Possibly in v3 (time permitting):
* New tool= DBC (DoomBuilder Config) which, given your wad with your DDF in it, generates a DB config file from it: you could just copy it into the DB directory and start using it. Whenever you add new stuff just run the tool again to overwrite and make a new one. It will parse Lines.ddf, sector.ddf and Things.ddf (even might get a sprite preview going in DB)

If anyone still has a reasonable feature request or an undiscovered bug, now's your chance!

I think you should upgrade the interface. It seems fine now, but the interface makes me want to cry. I don't know why. If you change it up, or allow the user the change the interface, that'd be awesome. In all actuality, you should have an option to make the interface similar to XWE -- that's why I like it so much...I'll try to think of other things later, but for now it's a pretty cool ulitilty. I don't use it as much as I would like but still -- I load it up every time I get ready to mod.

Make the interface look like XWE?

Even supposing that XWE had the greatest, prettiest and most efficient GUI in the world, how could I make EMUS look like XWE? I mean they are VERY different programs, conceptually and visually. How would I go about making FRT look like XWE? or even IDT?

Also, you said the current GUI "seems fine now" but also "makes you want to cry"? Isn't that a contradiction?

If you're trying to hint at skinning then go get yourself Winamp and go nuts with it. I've been asked about skinning before (for ESL) and I honestly can't see the point in wasting my time writing all the code just on the off chance that one or two people might think it's "cool": this app is a set of utilities that you open, do your stuff and then close. It's not something you leave fullscreen being pretty while you go do something else(like an MP3 player for example).

Mmm, I don't think beautification should be Lobo's priority :P You wouldn't buy a shovel in fashionable designer colours.

I have an idea for EMUS if there will be a map browser RTS cordinate selector would be very useful feature. You could select cordinates for your RTS script's RADIUS_TRIGGERs and RECT_TRIGGERs directly from the map.

Been on holidays for the last couple of weeks so sorry for not being around.

Thanks for the feedback folks:

@ Nick: I'll look into the mousewheel thing, though I'm sure it works in DDF offline at least. I'll double check.
The "simple" searching isn't that simple to code unfortunately, though it is a desirable feature all right. I'll see what I can do.

@tomppa: I've been wanting to do this from the very first moment I started working on EMUS, but unfortunately it's currently not feasible because I would have to learn a shedload of stuff to implement a very small feature (it's one thing to muck around with wad entries and something very different to dissect Dooms' map format). I have been thinking about ways to get around these issues however but I can't promise anything.
I'd really like to implement this one day though.

Yeah, a find command is very important. Also, Ctrl + C doesn't seem to copy highlighted text, supprisingly this tiny issue has been bugging the hell out of me. I use Ctrl + C alot to quickly copy DDF parameters over.
My 2 cents.

Trivial question for you folks but it's been naggling at me for a while:

Should I bump up the version number every time I add a new Utility to EMUS? Say v2, v3, v4 etc instead of v1.1, v1.2, v1.3 etc.

What do you folks think?

Looking good so far! I couldn't get too much use out of it right now because Vista isn't giving me much access to my other hard drive but looks neat!

Lobo, good job with the latest beta.
Being a bit picky, and I know this is probably difficult to implement, is it possible to have a 'firefox' style of find function?
In a nutshell, it opens up a tab docked across the bottom of the browser with the find box, next previous etc. The big advantage is that it highlights all instances of the found word, as well as leaves focus on the actual browser.
Appart from that, awesome job Lobo!

Well, I had a few hours free over the last couple of days and I've been working on a new tool tentatively titled MST: MD2 States Tool.

What it does is take an md2 model, reads all the animation info it can from it, then it generates the DDF code for the STATES()=.

It seemed like a good idea at the time but I'm not sure if it'll be that useful for people: it is handy to quickly test a model since it saves the tedious task of doing each individual state/frame entry but I suppose it's too general for the real thing because you'll inevitably have to tweak all the state specials.

It's coded now anyway, so I guess you folks are gonna be stuck with it in the next version of EMUS even if nobody finds it useful :D
