I can do weapon effects :D Unfortunately...how're we going to get exposure when Doomworld practically goes out of their way to cover up EDGE's existence these days?

Heh, here's an idea for TC: EDGE Marine vs. ZDoom Marine :P It's got ZDoom in the title, so Doomworld can't ignore it :P

How about a mod without any doom "feel" eg. custom huds, fonts and graphics + 3d models and other impressive shit. Then we advertise EDGE as "game engine". Then lots of advertising on lots of other forums. That way we could get more devs for EDGE mods

I'm starting to get tired of all the 'standalone engine' ideas. EDGE is the enhanced Doom gaming engine, and the mods developed for it will never be more than mods. No matter how you fancy it up, it's still an engine built on Doom code, that inherits its unique limitations and features. Trying to make your mods anything more than Doom is a feeble and incredibly lofty goal, to be sure, you'd be better off creating a really solid Doom mod than a cheap and buggy 'new' game.

I'm not trying to put anyone down, but you all need to get a grip. It's a 10 some odd year old engine. Furthermore, I really don't think 'advertising' would help anything. Nothing pisses me off more than annoying adverts, especially in forum posts - it's a practice that's become popular lately, I don't know why : somebody joins a random forum, makes one long copy+paste post singing praises about a dying community/game/porn site or what have you, forgets about it, then moves on to the next random forum =p It's really quite silly. Anyway, that's my opinion on that.

the idea with making such map is quite nice but isn't there a mod whis this things done?
and map must be with shooting and action. i don't think that people will like such a boring map like doing shopping =/

Actually the Robotech WIP was completely standalone i.e. you don't need doom2.wad to play it.

In my case at least, the attraction of a "Standalone" mod for EDGE is to make it easier on the end user to play it: you save them the hassle of acquiring the game files for an old game.
If your mod is aimed at Doomers then this point is not so important obviously, but my mod was aimed at a different audience who would never have heard of wads, and in all probability wouldn't have a clue about commandlines etc.

And on a final note, remember that EDGE was originally called DosDoom: the name change was decided because
a) It was no longer for DOS, and
b) it was no longer Doom!
I don't think anyone making mods for EDGE tries to respect and maintain a vanilla Doom "feeling" in their project. I know I don't. If I wanted to keep it "Doomy" I'd use a less advanced, more Doomy port like PRBoom or whatever, not an OpenGL one that supports slopes, 3d Models, 24 bit textures, Jumping, flying etc.

When i was saying "new standalone game" i was still suggesting what would effectively be a complex "Doom TC"*, just one that didnt nessescarily need the Iwad to be played (or at least an empty, dummy one). I wasnt talking about making a rallying game or something XD

*-So effectively a brand-new 2.5D FPS!

Yes, specifically my opinion cannot be wrong. And make no mistake about that.

That said, you guys do act pretty overzealously.

Edit: You probably won't understand my point - which is, that attacking my free speech on an open forum is about the most asinine thing you can ever do. "That's your opinion", etc. No shit, eh?

Visplane Overflow proves a good point. EDGE is a doom source port, powerfull and versitile yes, but still based on the doom engine...

Not that it restricts it to making doom mods no, but getting too ambitious and portraying it as the messiah of homebrew gamemaking is kinda silly.

My 2 cents I guess.

Now, now lads, don't get all bent out of shape.

I've reread the whole thread again from start to finish and I have to say everyone is right!

At first I was kinda ... offended?... by what Visplane said, but after carefully reading his post I can see that he's basically right on most points if you stop, stand back, and really think about it.
But, Joppu is also completely correct in his assessment of EDGE and it's capabilities.

-Yes, EDGE is a Doom port which still has the excess baggage of it's origins on it's back.

-Yes, EDGE is an FPS engine which is very far from what Doom was.

I guess part of the problem here is just how do you define a game engine: I used to think that if you where just changing graphics/SFX and music then you were "modding" whereas if you were changing behavior and game logic then you were making a new game altogether. Nowadays that's not true though, because most new games allow you to "mod" them so much via scripting etc. that you can end up with a new game altogether... and yet you are only "modding".
And if you get into the world of "engines" like Irrlicht, Ogre and so on then the distinction gets really blurry.

However I do agree with Visplane about the whole "advertising" idea: I know I've spoken to some of you about this before, but the bottom line of my "modding" philosophy is that "You need to make your stuff to please yourself, not others." It's nice to get encouragement from others and so on, but your first and most important fan should be yourself.

And one more point, remember this: depending on where you advertise, it doesn't matter how great and revolutionary your EDGE project is because it will still be flamed and ridiculed... and the end result will be your own disappointment. I think the expression is "fiddling for water buffaloes*"?

(I'm sure there's a better expression for what I want to say but I can't think of it right now!)
